Janet and Mary Lou
“Helping hands where help is needed”
Janet and Mary Lou are the clinic’s health-cooks. Janet, an artist, originally from Philadelphia, lives in Playa del Carmen and has been volunteering for Angel Notion since her move to the Mayan Riviera. Mary Lou, originally from Cuba, has joined her one and a half years ago, and the two of them have been a wonderful team since.
The two come every Friday to the clinic to prepare healthy, nutritious meals for the patients suffering from diabetis who come for their regular check-up on an empty stomach.
Janet and Mary Lou’s main objectives are that the meals are an example of food that is good for diabetics, containing no salt, no sugar, soy protein and a lot of vegetables. They also offer cooking classes tailored to the patients’ needs and provide them with the recipes of the meals.
Their cuisine is quite international with food of Spanish origin, American and of course Mexican, using all the wonderful ingredients available at local markets.
One of their concerns is to prepare wholesome meals that stay within the budget of a population whose daily wage is in the range of USD 5,00. Janet proudly points out that the max. total cost for a meal for about 20-30 people is kept around US $ 20.00. They are proud to say that the funds for the groceries purchased come entirely from fundraisers they happily organize. Luncheons for their friends at a charge as well as auctions are on their agenda.
Mary Lou and Janet often work in tandem with two other women, Scotty and Gail, to collect funds for medical equipment. They also organize food and toy-drives around christmas time, when people receive gift baskets and are offered a photo opportunity with Santa on 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen.
Mary Lou and Janet have a KITCHEN WISHLIST, so anyone who comes for a visit or has the intention of donating to the clinic, please ask what is needed before you arrive.
It is amazing to see how much two women with a cause are able to contribute to a community that they so appreciate to live in.
